Garrotxa, Volcanoes and Craters
About this tour
The Garrotxa, in the province of Girona, is Catalonia's volcanic country. The Alta Garrotxa is all deep, narrow valleys, rock walls, and high crags with villages tucked among them; the Baixa Garrotxa is gentler and lower, shaped by past eruptions. This full-day excursion takes in both sides of that landscape.
Interest points
Departure
We leave Girona in the morning from the agreed meeting point and head for our first stop, Santa Pau.
First Stop
The medieval village of Santa Pau sits southeast of the Olot plain, in the heart of the volcanic zone. It has the highest concentration of volcanic features in the area: the Margarida volcano, the Jordà beech forest, and the Croscat volcano. We walk its streets, see the medieval wall, and explore the old town.
Santa Margarida Volcano
One of the best-known volcanoes in the area. We stop here for breakfast before walking up to the Chapel of Santa Margarida, which stands right inside the crater.
La Fageda
A beech forest that grew on top of an old lava flow, which is part of what makes it so striking. Walk beneath the tall trees, find out what the "tossols" are, and breathe the clean air. Then it is time for a picnic.
Banyoles
Our last stop, with a guided walk along the shore of its striking lake that fills in where it came from and how it took shape.
